Gyula Fodor Interiors on Falk Miksa utca

Gyula Fodor is not as famous as some of his contemporaries, many of whom were students of Lechner.  He did not build for the aristocracy.  Nor did he, for the most part, construct large public buildings, such as museums, theaters, schools or churches.  Mainly he built beautiful houses for wealthy people.  He took commissions from people who had the resources to make their buildings artistic.  Most of the work is done by famous craftsmen or artists.   The stained glass windows are by Miksa Roth.  Most of the wrought iron is Gero and Gyory.  The sculpture is Simon Ney.  These are houses meant for people to live in and to live among beauty.  Innovative, imaginative, aesthetic:  they are a delight from an irrevocable past. This post highlights two buildings from the very fashionable Falk Miksa utca.

At Falk Miksa utca 13 is one of Fodor's most iconic constructions.  Built in 1909, it is famous for its  facade, including a sculpture by Deszo Lanyi and Viktor Vass--one of the figures thought to be a portrait of the architect.

From the interior.

Further along is another Fodor building at Falk Miksa 18-20, Atlantic Shipping Company built in 1911.  The downstairs housed the company headquarters, and the upstairs the apartments of the owners.  Many of the details are similar to those used in other Fodor buildings, but the wealth and aesthetic demands of the owners, make this building more ornate.  The color scheme is also different from most of Fodor's other commissioned buildings.

This was all rather thrilling, two entrances on the same dayhree entrances in one day.  I soon saw another Fodor house interior, that of Steinhardt Haz, which I wrote about here.  However, I was about to hit the Mother Lode of Fodor interiors, as you will see in the next two posts.  .
