We have arrived for our monthly trip to Budapest and had a terrific night at one of our favorite spots: the Cafe IF, a great jazz bar about ten minutes away from our flat.
We went to hear what was advertised as Szakoky Classic Jazz, a quartet playing trumpet, saxophone, guitar, and bass. As it turned out, they played more. Four instruments became six, as a banjo and clarinet appeared. Then as the night went on, four men became five with the fifth playing drum. Then five became six with another person playing piano. Six became seven as another trumpet player appeared. In the end, there were eight people on stage playing some combination of trumpet, trombone, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, banjo, bass, piano and drum.
It was amazing. American jazz is universal, and these great Hungarian performer had a distinctly New Orleans sound.
